I get to Choose my experience of life, I get to Choose how I react to it, I get to Choose how I feel
I am in charge of my state (energy, emotions, mood, etc) and get to choose what I want that state to be.
This is a lesson that I’ve ‘known’ for a long time, but there is a difference between knowing on an intellectual level and knowing on a deep personal level (as a truth that speaks to your soul). This lesson hit me deep down this year and became a part of me when I noticed that I wasn’t showing up the way I wanted to for my kids (or myself!). I was moody, irritable, had a super short fuze, and wasn’t the calm, patient, caring mom that I longed to be.
I’ve had lots of opportunities where I’ve really used this ‘truth’ in deciding on how I want to feel about specific experiences (my dad’s death being one), but I hadn’t really learned how to implement it in daily life from moment to moment until this past year.
Now, don’t get me wrong… I’m not saying that these choices are easy. They are very simple though and become easy enough with practice using techniques to shift your mood and emotions (I’ll get into that in a minute).
I don’t know about you, but I was actually hurt and offended when I first started hearing people saying that I had a choice over my mood and emotions.
The first time came when I was really struggling with depression and self esteem issues in high school and my boyfriend at the time said very matter of factly: “I don’t believe in depression. I think if you want to be happy, you just decide to be happy.” I was crushed – as if I wanted to be depressed and feel like crap a lot of the time. Couldn’t he see how much I was hurting?
And then over the years this idea kept coming back to me about how I am in control of my emotions and I can choose how I feel. I have a super curious mind and naturally began to explore this concept. Little by little I learned things that would have an influence over how I felt (positive or negative, both physically and emotionally – this is important because they are deeply related).
And, just this past year, I’ve come to a really good realization that there are steps I can take on a daily basis to keep my mood and energy high so that I have the emotional reserves to deal with the moment to moment issues (stressors) that life hands us (the types of things that used to really throw me off and plunge me into a funk before).
